What Sets LitWorld Apart:
We cultivate a love of reading and writing because having the chance to experience that love is how literacy grows best and strongest. Literacy for LitWorld is not just about learning the alphabet or phonemic practice, it is also about cultivating creative expression, about the power of the read aloud to immerse children in the power of language, and about putting young people's stories out into the world, dignifying their experience and giving them a voice in the world. This is the way people really learn to read and write.
We believe that literacy is not a gift given just to some lucky ones, it is a foundational human right that brings joy, economic independence, gender equity and a pathway out of poverty. Everyone should have it.
We value and use as cornerstones of our programming the power of people’s own stories and a wide range of diverse children’s literature.
We collaborate with local, grassroots partners who know and recognize the languages, cultures, hopes and dreams of their community members. LitWorld adapts to each community’s self-identified literacy needs and gives children and families the opportunity to read, write and share their stories.
We define literacy for the 21st century interconnected world. LitWorld values access to texts, stories, and storytelling via any mode possible, whether it is a book in hand, a child’s story shared orally or a technological transfer of information and narrative.
We believe literacy is not an outcome. It is a strategy that helps people achieve the outcomes they most dearly want: independence, economic freedom, good health, a joyful life.
Two thirds of the world’s illiterate people are women and girls. Therefore, two thirds of LitWorld’s programming is focused on women and girls to right this imbalance.
LitWorld programs foster writing and reading in real ways for authentic audiences that are significant to young people.
We train local leaders who care deeply about, and are invested in growing sustainable, hopeful communities.
We believe in joyful partnerships, communities and literacy. Everything we do stems from a place of joy! And that joy does matter to successful outcomes, and it is rigorous too.
