LitWorld Manager for Communications, Fundraising and Mission Engagement

LitWorld’s Mission Engagement Manager will work closely and collaboratively across the staff and leadership groups to deepen and sustain LitWorld's worldwide literacy empowerment initiatives by engaging our extensive network in mission-driven communications and fundraising experiences. Success in this role will require excellent attention to detail, exceptional written and verbal communication skills, strong strategic thinking, an ability to build meaningful, lasting relationships, and an ability to work both collaboratively and independently in a fast-paced, entrepreneurial, joyful, mission-driven environment.

The Mission Engagement Manager will oversee the team responsible for implementing comprehensive fundraising, marketing, public relations, and communications strategies, working across the organization to share and grow LitWorld’s messaging and global work through the lens of advocacy, cultivation, community-building and gratitude. The ideal candidate will bring new ideas and a vision for elevating LitWorld’s presence, working with a passionate, collaborative staff to develop and achieve a robust communications and fundraising strategy. A successful candidate will be skilled in cultivating and nurturing a network of individual, foundation and corporate donor and partner prospects, and will be a highly organized, inventive, dynamic development and communications professional, fully committed to LitWorld's mission and dedicated to amplifying the voices of young people using the power of story as a tool for literacy empowerment.



  • Develops and executes an annual strategic fundraising and communications plan in collaboration with the staff and board
  • Creates and implements strategic design for research, identification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship of individual, corporate, and foundation supporters activated by social media and current events
  • Motivates and manages an energetic staff in maintaining fundraising schedules and objectives; ensures that plans are implemented, goals achieved, timely reports generated, information shared, and that LitWorld core values are consistent
  • Leads project management for the Annual Appeal and Spring Fundraiser
  • Oversees LitWorld’s development database and tracking systems to ensure appropriate donor stewardship and contact management
  • Expands LitWorld’s corporate partnerships and sponsorships and foundation grants
  • Enacts ideas for reaching new and existing friends of LitWorld through social media and other channels and oversees communications schedule
  • Integrates all organizational communications so that donor outreach, publications, website and social media, marketing, and media relations are in sync and support a unified message

Social Media & Website:

  • Oversees the daily sharing of stories, images and videos from the field to further LitWorld’s mission and to advocate for LitWorld’s work
  • Oversees the LitWorld website including writing, editing, and supporting the development of visual content
  • Ensures that LitWorld is using a consistent and compelling voice across all printed and online materials for internal and external use
  • Analyzes data on LitWorld's online channels and overall communications, including social media, website and email marketing, and shares analysis with LitWorld leaders to inform strategic planning


  • Writes and edits LitWorld-authored content including articles, presentations, proposals and marketing materials for external and internal channels
  • Coaches and collaborates with staff members on research and writing projects
  • Conducts the full range of activities required to research, prepare, submit, and manage grant proposals to foundation and corporate sources
  • Manages and writes for the LitWorld blog, newsletters and email communications
  • Oversees the maintenance and growth of LitWorld’s research archives for use in written communications and presentations
  • Supports additional projects with copy and content editing

Advocacy & Marketing:

  • Participates in and leads branding, PR and marketing meetings related to LitWorld’s overall organizational strategy and messaging
  • Leads and oversees communications strategy for advocacy days, including World Read Aloud Day and International Day of the Girl
  • Oversees LitWorld’s PR work, creating press releases and maintaining communication with key media partners
  • Develops and grows relationships with key communications partners, corporate sponsors andLitWorld’s online advocates
  • Manages and develops virtual fundraising and marketing video content to share the LitWorld story online and at special events
  • Oversees the creation of LitWorld’s annual report


  • Bachelor’s Degree required, Master's Degree in an applicable field a plus
  • Articulate leader with the ability to create and implement innovative programs and strategies to educate, motivate, inform and inspire donors and others to meet the organization's funding needs
  • Experience in successfully communicating the mission, vision, values and compelling cases to multiple audiences, one-on-one and through formal proposals, correspondence and presentations
  • Experience in advancement strategy, fundraising, and donor cultivation, with results that clearly relate to the work you have done
  • Knowledge of fundraising and hands-on familiarity with direct mail, grants management, planned giving, special events, computerized constituent-management systems and external communications
  • Exceptionally well organized with thoughtful, sensitive attention to detail and follow-through on projects, with clearly defined deadlines and capacity to move projects along
  • Demonstrated strong leadership skills as a creative, out-of-the-box strategic thinker and problem solver
  • Flexibility to engage with multiple tasks and relationships, prioritize projects and not get overwhelmed
  • Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills, from an informal email to a grant proposal to a social media post
  • Comfort with Word, Excel and PowerPoint
  • Experience with Salesforce or a similar database
  • Experience with MailChimp, Squarespace, Google Drive, Asana a plus
